To be clear, Peter Kowald arrived at the airport, rented the station wagon he would tour the U.S. in, came to the Cat's Cradle and rehearsed with us in the afternoon, took a break for a couple of hours, performed an hour-plus bass solo, then conducted the ensemble through the pieces he had rehearsed that afternoon. These appear as the "Conducted Vignettes, Large and Small, Long and Short," a 27-minute piece. Mr. Kowald joined the ensemble for the remaining pieces on this release.

The poster was created by Ron Liberti for the Alliance for Improvised Music, an organization constructed out of Walt Davis's passion for exploratory improvised and composed forms of music.
